Roland has been awake for some time.

His coughing has yet to stop.

His eyes are bright and glassy.

He's really tired of looking at the ceiling.

Welcome to hell, he thinks. You deserve it.

"Sai." Peter's voice is calm. "I don't know what's usual in your world. If you have any questions, please ask. And if I'm hurting you, please tell me. I promised Jake that I would help him and his ka-tet any way I could, to the best of my abilities. If you're upset or hurt, I'm not helping to the best of my abilities. And I'd like to keep my promise."

Don't close yourself. Please.

"I appreciate everything that you've done, Peter. Is there anything I should know in case he gets worse?"

Peter glances at Roland. "No need for thanks, sai. You're not well yet. And in any case, a Healer is what I am, as a gunslinger is what you are.

He turns to Jake. "Keep him warm and fed, make sure he takes the Keflex at four-hour intravals and make him rest. If his breathing gets worse and his lungs don't clear, I'll set up an oxygen tent to help him breathe. And I'll be round to see how he's doing; there might be things I'd notice that you wouldn't."

He glances back at Roland. "I'll knock first, sai.

"In the meantime, however, I think you're set. Good night, sai Roland. Good night, Jake."

And with that, Peter exits the room.

Well, you're done being prodded for now, Jake says after Peter departs. Do you want me to leave you so you can rest?

Jake stares at him for a moment, face impassive and perhaps mirroring Roland's own.

The he leans forward and presses a swift kiss to his forehead as a son would do to his father.

Perhaps it is absolution. Perhaps it is comfort. Jake thinks that it is somewhere in between the two.

I will stay for awhile, and he sits and pulls a tattered paperback out of his pocket.

A book that Val gave me. It's her story, actually, or at least part of it. It's mostly about her youngest brother, he says, holding the cover up for him to see.

Don't apologize for it, he says, flipping the book open. I would have been angry if I had missed it.

There was truth in some of the things said. There was also a good deal of piss, as you say. But it concerned me to a degree and I would be there to hear it.

All the same, I am glad I was there. And I would palaver with Joe again soon ... I did not settle everything I had to say with him.

He stands and closes the book. You need to rest, however, and conversation like this can wind its way through miles of road.

He would do well to be wary of me, Jake things to himself. He smooths the blanket over Roland's chest, checks to see that the Keflex and inhaler are within easy reach for him and turns to go.

Sleep well.
