lastgunslingerRoland's room has a fireplace. There is nothing to burn in it; perhaps one night he will go hunting for wood out by the lake. Perhaps not.
Roland's room has a chair that is so soft it almost feels shameful to sit in it. He does anyway.
Roland's room has a small desk. In the drawer are paper and pens. He marvels at the quantity. Paper is rare where he comes from.
Roland's room has a double bed. The duvet is made of down, and there are down pillows. The room to toss and turn seems sinful -- or not befitting a gunslinger, at the very least.
Roland is stretched out on his bed, arms tucked behind his head. His hat rests on the nightstand. His boots sit primly side by side on the floor. He is thinking.
Joe doesn't trust Todd, either.
The Dream-lord is in the bar. It has been a while since Roland has spoken with kings. A very long while. He can only hope that the Dream-lord will be tractable; he will wait until the Dream-lord's lady returns. Roland makes a mental note to ask Joe, the next time he sees him.
There is much that Joe is not saying. Not, of course, that Roland expects the man to spill his guts to him -- but why have such a violent reaction to the mention of ka if it means nothing to you? And the mention of gunslingers. Roland doesn't know quite what to make of Joe's reaction to Roland's definition of his job title -- but the man was upset, and Roland wants to know why.
Roland also wants to stop Jake's dreams. Roland also wants Todd out of the picture.
He turns over on his side. For now, a sleep won't hurt. When he wakes, he will find Jake, and tell him what he has learned.
