It's easy enough to approach a stall, projecting stock hand with every step, and remove a likely-looking workhorse meant for the rodeo.
A little less simple: working his way out of town. The National Western complex lies in the northeastern part of the city; Roland picks up along the banks of the South Platte River, and follows it north.
Sticking to the Platte proves to be the wisest choice. Denver sits on a high plain, with hills that roll and sway like a snapshot of a great ocean. Outside town, when you fly a plane low over the terrain, the land looks like something you could pet, something you want to run your fingers through. It's not possible to do this in the northern parts of town very well, because settlement -- lights, trees, houses, the big box stores and the roads in their painfully orderly grid -- covers the quiet hills and subtle valleys like a blanket.
Roland stays quiet and goes as instinct tells him -- sweeping along the Platte to the northeast, and once he hits the outskirts of Greeley, Colorado, he switches course to straight north.
